So I’m looking for a business listing in the Lake Oconee area and I come across this great new website www.LakeOconeeLiving.com. I’m searching through it, can’t believe how much information it has on it, and I come across this “blog” (noun) section which says anyone can “blog” (verb) if they want to. So which is it – a noun or a verb? I’m confused. And what does it stand for? Big Lumps of Grits? Big Legs On Gorillas? Big Lake Oconee Gossip?
So I read through a few others and found a few pretty interesting and thought to myself – well I like to sit on the soapbox and show off what I know, too, so why not give it a whirl! Slight problem though…still not entirely sure of what a “blog” really is. So I decided what better to “blog” about for my first “blog” than what a “blog” really is for those of us who want to know!
Here’s what I found out:
‘A weblog is a hierarchy of text, images, media objects and data, arranged chronologically, that can be viewed in an HTML browser.’
Huh? Is this Greek? Not helping me at all except I THINK weblog got shortened to blog along the way. We’re such a lazy society.
‘A blog is basically a journal that is available on the web. The activity of updating a blog is “blogging” and someone who keeps a blog is a “blogger.” Blogs are typically updated daily using software that allows people with little or no technical background to update and maintain the blog. Postings on a blog are almost always arranged in chronological order with the most recent additions featured most prominently.’
Awesome. Confirmation that’s it’s MY journal and I can write about whatever I want to. Good. Oh and also confirmation that “blog” is both a noun AND a verb – plus I now claim I’m a “blogger.” And good, also looks like I need little or no technical background to update and maintain this thing either which is a dang good thing cause I’m certainly no techie…trekkie, yes…techie, definitely no.
Blogs are usually (but not always) written by one person and are updated pretty regularly. Blogs are often (but not always) written on a particular topic - there are blogs on virtually any topic you can think of. From photography, to spirituality, to recipes, to personal diaries to hobbies - blogging has as many applications and varieties as you can imagine. Not all blogs use comments - but most do. This blog is not a monologue but a conversation. You can give feedback by clicking the ‘comments’ link at the bottom of each post. This will take you to a little form where you leave your name, email and a link to your own blog if you have one as well as your feedback, comment, critique, or question.
Excellent. I get to have a conversation with everyone…by saying whatever I feel like…online…at my discretion. Gee, wish blogging was the only interaction I had to have with my in-laws (hmm…think that might be a good Fine Whine blog topic brewing).
OK – so it seems pretty open – having your own blog allows you to talk about whatever the heck you want, whenever the heck you want to. The experts did say it’s better to blog more often than not to have a “successful” blog so I’m going to attempt to blog weekly about whatever I feel like talking about. My blog shall be called “A Fine Whine” because well I like fine wine, and to whine a lot, so it’s a fun play on words. Also chose to remain anonymous in case I have too much wine (or whine) while I’m blogging and end up offending someone. Guess I’ll have to worry about these two Reynolds youngsters blocking my post though if it’s too offensive…hmmm they should know age before beauty so they wouldn’t dare. Or would they? I think I feel another blog topic brewing!!!
Until next whine…I mean time!
